DevOps engineer in practice

A DevOps role may own CI/CD, Terraform, cloud accounts, Kubernetes deployments, artifact management and release controls. Strong roles improve flow and reliability across teams. Weak roles become ticket queues for deployments. Ask whether teams have self-service, whether infrastructure changes are code-reviewed and whether the role owns production outcomes.

SRE in practice

An SRE role should connect reliability to user expectations through service-level indicators and objectives, reduce operational toil with engineering and improve incident response. Google’s public SRE material describes responsibility spanning availability, latency, performance, efficiency, change management, monitoring, emergency response and capacity planning. A role that only watches dashboards and restarts services may be operations with an SRE title.

Platform engineer in practice

Platform engineers treat internal developers as users. They build deployment APIs, templates, service catalogues, environment provisioning, policy guardrails and observability integrations. The key measure is not how many tools the platform contains; it is whether teams can ship and operate software with less cognitive load while retaining appropriate control.

Compensation in India: approximate and highly variable

As of August 2026, public user-submitted data shows a very wide market. Glassdoor’s India SRE page displays an overall base-pay band around ₹7–17 lakh and a senior SRE total-pay band around ₹19–33 lakh, while individual Bengaluru submissions can sit well above or below those figures. Levels.fyi reports the all-level India software-engineer total-compensation interquartile range at roughly ₹17–49 lakh. These datasets use different samples and definitions; they are reference points, not offers or salary guarantees.

DevOps, SRE and platform pay is driven more by company tier, level, coding expectations, production scope, location and equity than by title alone. Compare current role-and-level data across multiple sources. Separate fixed, variable and annualized equity, and check the data date and sample size.

Questions to ask before accepting

Conclusion

The boundaries are porous: a mature team may combine all three disciplines. Optimize for the actual problems, engineering depth and ownership you want, then benchmark compensation against that role and level.

Frequently asked questions

Is SRE higher than DevOps?

No universal hierarchy exists. Companies use titles differently. Compare level, scope, coding and production ownership.

Which role requires more coding?

SRE and platform roles often expect stronger software engineering, but some DevOps roles are deeply coded and some titled SRE roles are operational. Read the actual charter.

Are the salary ranges guaranteed?

No. They are approximate August 2026 user-submitted reference points with different samples. Verify current role, level, city and company data.

Can I move between the three?

Yes. Linux, cloud, networking, IaC, Kubernetes, coding and observability transfer well. Fill gaps in SLOs, product thinking or software design for the target.
