A DevOps role may own CI/CD, Terraform, cloud accounts, Kubernetes deployments, artifact management and release controls. Strong roles improve flow and reliability across teams. Weak roles become ticket queues for deployments. Ask whether teams have self-service, whether infrastructure changes are code-reviewed and whether the role owns production outcomes.

An SRE role should connect reliability to user expectations through service-level indicators and objectives, reduce operational toil with engineering and improve incident response. The key measure is not how many tools the platform contains; it is whether teams can ship and operate software with less cognitive load while retaining appropriate control.
Compensation in India: approximate and highly variable
As of August 2026, public user-submitted data shows a very wide market. Glassdoor’s India SRE page displays an overall base-pay band around ₹7–17 lakh and a senior SRE total-pay band around ₹19–33 lakh, while individual Bengaluru submissions can sit well above or below those figures. Levels.fyi reports the all-level India software-engineer total-compensation interquartile range at roughly ₹17–49 lakh. These datasets use different samples and definitions; they are reference points, not offers or salary guarantees.
DevOps, SRE and platform pay is driven more by company tier, level, coding expectations, production scope, location and equity than by title alone. Compare current role-and-level data across multiple sources. Separate fixed, variable and annualized equity, and check the data date and sample size.
