Do not take the fresher route
The most expensive mistake here is following advice written for beginners: a long course, tutorial projects, then entry-level applications. It discards everything you already have. The faster path uses your current employer, your existing domain knowledge and your network to enter the new area near your current level.
Plan around real constraints
Most people at this stage carry EMIs, dependents and limited runway, so a transition requiring months without income is not a real option. Design the move so income never stops: build evidence while employed, move internally where possible, and make the external switch the last step rather than the first.
Use context as the differentiator
Someone who understands how banking settlement, telecom provisioning or retail supply chains actually work, and can now build in the new domain, is worth more than someone holding only the new skill. Pair the domain you are leaving with the one you are entering โ that combination is scarcer than either alone.
