Be the answer to one named problem
A profile that says experienced engineering leader competes with everyone. A profile that says fifteen years building payment platforms, including two migrations off a legacy core, competes with almost nobody. Narrow the claim until it excludes most roles โ the goal here is to be obviously right for a few, not vaguely acceptable to many.
Accept that the search is relationship-first
Roles at this level are frequently shaped around a person rather than posted and screened. The working pipeline is former colleagues, ex-managers, founders and recruiters who already know your work. Cold applications still land occasionally, but running them as the main channel is what turns a three-month search into a year.
Be ready to justify the cost
You are an expensive hire, and every panel quietly asks what breaks without you. Have a direct answer: the risk you remove, the bad decisions you prevent, the delivery you unblock. Candidates who cannot answer that get filtered on budget rather than on ability, and never learn which one it was.
