Map your depth to the role, then pick targets
List what you have genuinely operated: incidents you handled, systems you debugged in production, automation you wrote, pipelines you owned. That list points at platform, SRE, DevOps or backend infrastructure roles far more often than at general application development. The switch gets easier the moment your target matches the evidence you already hold.
SRE and platform loops test different things
These loops usually include coding, but they weight Linux internals, networking, debugging a live system, incident reasoning and infrastructure design far more heavily than competitive programming. Preparing for a generic software engineering loop while interviewing for platform roles wastes weeks. Confirm the round structure with the recruiter and prepare against that structure specifically.
Production incidents are the strongest stories you have
A well-told incident story shows debugging under pressure, systems thinking, blast-radius judgement and follow-through, which is exactly what these interviews score. Prepare three: what broke, how you narrowed it down, what you changed, and what stopped it recurring. Most candidates from operations backgrounds undervalue this material and lead with tool lists instead.
