What is the honest difference between DevOps and SRE hiring in India?
In practice the titles overlap and the loops do not. DevOps roles are usually judged on delivery tooling: pipelines, artefact management, IaC, environment provisioning, and container platforms. SRE roles are judged on production reliability, debugging and systems depth. Many Indian job descriptions list both, so the safer approach is to prepare for the one your evidence supports and read each JD for which side it actually leans on.
Can I get a DevOps role without any coding background?
You need scripting, not application development. Reading and writing Python or Bash confidently, handling YAML without guessing, and understanding how an application is configured at runtime covers most of it. Where candidates get stuck is debugging a build script someone else wrote. That is a reading skill, and it improves fastest by working through your own company's existing pipelines rather than tutorials.
Do I need a cloud certification before applying?
It helps at the screening stage, particularly if your current role has no cloud exposure on paper. An associate-level AWS or Azure certification is usually enough to get past keyword filters. Beyond that it stops mattering quickly, because the technical rounds ask you to design or debug something specific and a certification answer is visibly a certification answer.
Will I have to take a title downgrade to move into DevOps?
Sometimes the title moves sideways while the trajectory improves. What you should not accept is a level reset justified only by the domain change, when your production ownership and years are genuinely comparable. We prepare the argument for that in advance, with your incident and delivery evidence framed so the hiring manager can defend your level internally rather than defaulting to the lowest band.
